BELGRADE (Serbia): Indian ace wrestler and Olympic medalist Bajrang Punished won a bronze medal in the men’s 65 kg category at the World Championships Struggle 2022 Championships, defeating Sebastian C Rivera of Puerto Rico in the bronze medal bout.
He beat Rivera in the fight by 11-9. The wrestler, who recently won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, scripted a remarkable comeback to win the match. He won based on VPO1-Points and opponent scores.
In the early stages of the match, Punia looked down and out, trailing by 0-6. But then he fought his way back into the game, scoring 11 points and only letting his opponent score three more.
He returned to the medal hunt after losing to American John Michael Diakomihalis in the quarter-finals by 10-0, on a Victory by Superiority (VSU) basis.
A hard-fought 7-6 victory over Armenian Vazgen Tevanyan took him to the bronze medal match. He took the win based on VPO1-Points and opponent scores.
This is Punia’s fourth medal at the Championships, starting his journey with bronze in 2013. He then won silver at the 2018 Championships and followed that with another bronze in 2019. Now he has four championship medals.
This is India’s second medal at this edition of the World Wrestling Championships.
Indian wrestler and 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Vinesh Phogat won a bronze medal in the women’s 53kg category at the 2022 World Wrestling Championships taking place in Belgrade on Wednesday, beating defending European champion Emma Malmgren of Sweden.
The three-time CWG gold medalist outscored her Swedish opponent to win the match 8-0.
