The 2022 T20 World Cup kicks off in Australia next month and all teams are in the final stages of their preparations. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team currently plays against the defending T20 World Cup champions Australia in a bilateral series. After an unforgettable Asia Cup campaign, where they failed to qualify for the final, the series against Australia, followed by one against South Africa, will be the last two bilateral matches India plays for the T20 World Cup. On the other hand, Pakistan will face England in a seven-match T20I series. All these teams are heavyweights going to the T20 World Cup.

Former BCCI selector Saba Karim recently gave his take on the ‘favourites’ in the T20 World Cup. He thinks Australia will retain the title this year.

“I think they will continue to be a formidable squad and be the favourites. Especially as they play on Australian soil and the kind of changes they have brought to the team reflects that they are in sync with what it takes to run such tournaments in Australia,” he said. Saba Karim on Sports 18.

“Big ground, so you need a little more power hitters, so they fill up that kind of portion on the side. So they’ve got Tim David and Glen Maxwell. On this team, for example, you don’t have Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, both very high in terms of clout. So this kind of combination makes them a very strong side to hold the T20 World Cup again.”

The Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup kicks off on October 22 with a game between New Zealand and Australia in Sydney. India will play their first match against Pakistan on October 23 in Melbourne.
