Smriti Mandhana 2nd Only To Rohit Sharma In Elite T20I List Of Indian Openers

Reckless Indian batter Smriti Mandhana became her country’s second opener on Wednesday after Rohit Sharma who reached 2,000 runs in T20I-cricket. Mandhana reached this milestone in her match against Barbados at the 2022 Commonwealth Games cricket tournament in Birmingham. Although Mandhana’s stint was cut short at the crease when she was tied for Shanika Bruce’s wicket for five from seven balls, she still finished her inning with this record under her belt.

As the opener, Mandhana scored 2,004 runs in 79 innings with an average of 27.45. She has broken 14 half-centuries in this position, with the best score of 86.

Rohit Sharma is also a prolific T20I opener for India. In his 96 innings as the opener, he scored 2,973 runs at an average of 33.03. He scored four centuries and 22 half-centuries in this position with a best of 118.

In CWG 2022, Mandhana has scored 92 runs in three innings so far at an average of 46.00. Her best of 63* came against Pakistan.

In India’s match against Barbados, the Women in Blue secured their place in the semi-finals after beating Barbados by 100 runs on Wednesday.

First to bat, India put a solid 162/4 on the board. Shafali Verma (43), Jemimah Rodrigues (56*) and Deepti Sharma (34*) played some valuable blows for India. Shanika Bruce, Hayley Matthews and Shakera Selman each took one wicket for Barbados.

Barbados chased 163 and lost wickets regularly and at one point it was 5/32. Except for Kyshona Knight (16) and Shakera Selman (12*), none of the batters could hit the double-digit mark. Their final score was 62/8 in 20 overs.


Renuka Singh destroyed the Barbados batting with her 4/10 spell in four overs. Sneh Rana, Radha Yadav, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Meghna Singh each took a wicket.

India is second in Group A with four points, behind Australia, which has six points.
