NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday appointed former Supreme Court Justice Justice L Nageswara Rao to amend the constitution of Indian Olympic Association and preparation of the electoral college.
A bench headed by Judge D.Y. Chandrachud said the former top judge would ensure a fair and development-oriented approach to the future of the Olympics in the country.
The Supreme Court has asked Justice Rao to prepare a roadmap to amend the constitution and hold elections by December 15, 2022.
He also gave his permission to Rajeev Mehtacurrently secretary general of IAOand Adille SumariwallaVice-President of the IOA, to participate in the September 27 meeting with the International Olympic Committee.
“All logistical arrangements will be made available to Judge Rao by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and to be reimbursed by the IOA”, the bench, also including Justice Hima Kohlisaid.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on September 8 issued a final warning to the IOA to “resolve its governance issues” and hold elections by December, failing which the world sports body will ban India.
The IOC Executive Board, which met in Lausanne, Switzerland, had also decided not to recognize any “interim/interim president” after the ousting of Narinder Batra as president of the Indian Olympic Association and said she would deal with Secretary General Rajeev Mehta as the main contact point.
