Pakistani Naseem Shah will miss Wednesday’s fifth T20I against England in Lahore after the pacer was taken to hospital with a serious viral infection on the eve of the match. Naseem was to be seen in the fifth T20I, but the youngster had to be hospitalized late Tuesday night after his health deteriorated. Although he feels better, his participation in the rest of the series is up for debate.

“He was taken to hospital with a viral infection, but he is now feeling better,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement.

“He will not play tonight and any decision about whether or not to play the remaining games will be made on the advice of the medical commission,” the statement said.

A source close to the team said tests have been conducted for dengue as the mosquito-borne infection has been rampant in the city since last month, with thousands of cases reported every day.

The source added that Naseem had been complaining of chest pains and fever since Tuesday after the team reached Lahore from Karachi with a seven-game score at 2-2.

Naseem had played the series opener before missing the last three games.

The 21-year-old is Pakistan’s go-to bowler for lack of pace javelin Shaheen Afridi, who has been out of circulation since mid-July due to a knee injury.

Both Shaheen and Naseem have been named in Pakistan’s T20 World Cup roster.
