The captain of the Nepal cricket team, Sandeep Lamichhane, has been accused by a 17-year-old girl of raping her in a hotel room in Kathmandu, police said on Thursday. The teenage girl filed an FIR with the Gaushala Metropolitan Police Circle in Kathmandu on Tuesday, alleging 22-year-old Lamichhane raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu about three weeks ago. According to the case filed with the Gaushala police ring, Sandeep allegedly took the girl to various places in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur on Aug. 21 and raped her at a hotel in Kathmandu that same night.
However, police said they are collecting evidence, including CCTV footage, regarding the incident. It said nothing can be said without properly investigating the matter.
Lamichhane currently plays in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). His first big break came when he became the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he made his debut for the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2018.
He was recently named captain of the Nepal national cricket team. However, Lamichhane, who is accused of raping a minor, has denied the charges and says he is innocent, according to a media report citing the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).
