AHMEDABAD: Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist Nayanmoni Saikia of Assam caught the eye on the opening day of the lawn bowls competition in the National gamescomfortably winning two singles matches and a tag team match on Wednesday.
Saikia started the day with an emphatic 23-0 victory over Vaishali Makvana of Gujarat in a Group A game and ended it with a 21-10 win over Beena Shah of West Bengal.
She also joined her Assam teammates in posting a 33-3 verdict against Manipur in the Fours competition at Kensville Golf and Country Club near here.
A member of the Indian Fours team that made history at Birmingham CWG last month, Saikia is delighted that her sport is getting a lot of attention.
“The gold medal gave bowls a boost. But we have to make sure that our victory was not a fluke. We must continue to perform to maintain its popularity,” Nayanmoni, Assam Deputy Superintendent of Police, said after a very successful day.
“National Games are getting bigger and better. Naturally, there will be pressure on every athlete. But it’s up to the senior players to leave a mark and lead the way,” said the 34-year-old from Golaghat.
Meanwhile, in Bhavnagar, Gujarat men’s netball team qualified for the semi-finals with a 57-33 win over Punjab in their last Group A game. Needing a win to avoid a three-way tie with Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat stuck to their task and held on well in the lead in the game.
Gujarat will meet the winners of Group B while the best of Group A Haryana will play the other semi-final. Telangana and Delhi have taken the two Group B spots in the last four stages. Both Telangana and Delhi finished with two wins and one draw in their three matches each.
At the EKA TransStadia stadium in Ahmedabad, Delhi and West Bengal became the first men’s teams to win places in the Rugby 7s semi-finals, beating Punjab and Odisha in their Group B matches.
Delhi recorded a 26-0 victory over Punjab and beat Odisha 14-10 while Bengal secured a 24-7 win over Odisha and backed it up with a 22-12 win over Punjab.
In other matches, Haryana beat Gujarat 28-0 and Services held Maharashtra 14-14 in the men’s Group A. Bihar had it easy against the hosts 44-0 while Maharashtra beat Delhi 19-10 in an uphill battle in Women’s Group A.
West Bengal and Odisha started Group B with wins over Chandigarh 29-5 and Kerala 64-0 in Women’s Group B.
Shooting competition kicks off at the Rifle Club on Thursday with the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Stage 1 event. Vijayveer Sidhu (Punjab), 2012 Olympics silver medalist Vijay Kumar (Himachal Pradesh) and Gurpreet Singh (Services) are in the fray.
