Mitrovic nets twice as Fulham hold Liverpool to a 2-2 draw | Football News

LONDON: Aleksandar Mitrovicthe goalscoring double was canceled out by strikes from Darwin Nunez and Mohammad Salah as newly-promoted Fulham held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw in the sides’ opening game of the Premier League season at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
The home side took the lead in the 32nd minute when they broke the right, and Kenny Tete’s cross was met by the lively Mitrovic, who edged past Trent Alexander-Arnold at the far post to head home .
Luis Diaz nearly equalized minutes later, firing a shot in front of goal, but the ball bounced off the far post as last season’s runners-up struggled to deal with Fulham’s physique in the opening 45 minutes.
Fulham almost doubled their advantage in the 57th minute as the ball was headed down the right and Neeskens Kebano unleashed a thundering shot that hit the far post.
Set to be among the title contenders again this year, Liverpool’s fortunes turned with the introduction of new signing Nunez in the second half, and the Uruguayan wasted no time in showing why Liverpool paid to Benfica an initial sum of 75 million euros for his services.
Nunez attempted to revive his striking partners shortly after arriving before leveling with a brilliant finish just after the hour mark.
Despite barely threatening after the break, Fulham quickly returned to the top as Mitrovic, who scored 43 goals in 44 league games last season, was stumbled into the box by Virgil van Dijkand the striker stepped in to strike home from the penalty spot to make it 2-1.
However, Liverpool refused to capitulate and Salah leveled them, heading home from close range. Jordan Henderson nearly grabbed the three points for the visitors with a strike in stoppage time, but his shot landed on the crossbar.
“We showed fantastic organization from start to finish. And the plan was clear to our players and they did it very well,” Fulham manager Marco Silva told BT Sport .
Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was happy to come out of the game with a point but had harsh words for his side’s effort on the opening day of the season.
“The result is good, I don’t think we deserved more than that. But the performance is massively upgradable,” he told BT Sport.
