Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag tells Cristiano Ronaldo to improve match fitness after missing pre-season | Football News

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag said Cristiano Ronaldo could adapt to his style of play, but the striker would need to develop his fitness before he has the chance to prove he deserves a place in the team.
Ronaldo did not join United’s squad for his pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia and was ruled out of a friendly loss to Atletico Madrid but played 45 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.
When asked if the Portugal international could fit into his vision of how he wanted United to play, Ten Hag told Sky Sports: “I think he can.
“But to start he has to get in shape, he has just started.
“He’s a fantastic football player, he’s proven that time and time again, but you can always be judged by who you are now, what you show now, how you perform now.”
Ronaldo’s future at United has been the subject of intense speculation after British media reported that the 37-year-old had told the club he wanted to leave so he could play in the Champions League.
United, who will play in the second-tier Europa League this term, open their premier league Sunday campaign against Brighton & Hove Albion.
