PARIS: Paris Saint-Germain striker Neymar scored his eighth Ligue 1 goal of the season as the champions beat Brest 1-0 at the Parc des Princes on Saturday to extend their unbeaten start and reclaim top spot in the table.
The result, obtained after Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a late penalty from Islam Slimani to mean Christophe Galtier’s side have 19 points from seven games, two more than second-placed RC Lens, who topped the table after a 1-0 win on Troyes on Friday.
Olympique de Marseille can level the points with PSG if they beat visitors Lille later on Saturday.
Brest entered the competition having conceded a club record 16 goals in their first six games and were opened in the 30th minute despite a brilliant start as Neymar fired from a tight angle after being played by Lionel Messi .
The visitors were lucky not to be reduced to 10 minutes early as Christophe Herelle was shown a red card for mowing down Neymar, but a review prompted the referee to reverse his decision as the PSG striker was out -game before the tackle.
PSG turned the screw on their opponents and Messi and Kylian Mbappe squandered clean chances either side of half-time before 17th-placed Brest were kicked but tamed Slimani’s effort in the 70th minute was prevented by Donnarumma.
The Italian keeper was then called into action and kept his side in front with a diving save after the ball appeared to enter the near post from Slimani’s shoulder following a whipped cross from the left.
