Ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup in October-November, the Rohit Sharma-led Team India will face Australia in a three-match T20I series, starting Tuesday in Mohali. It would be interesting to see if the hosts persist in the experiments seen in the Asian Cup, where the team failed to reach the final. As India had designated rosters for the T20 World Cup and series against Australia and South Africa, the BCCI had announced that “Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will report to the NCA for conditioning-related work over the course of the home series against Australia and South Africa.”
Arshdeep will not be playing series against Australia, while Hardik and Bhuvneshwar will not be available for series against South Africa. Prior to the India-Australia series, Gautam Gambhir and Matthew Hayden spoke at a press conference hosted by Star Sports Network, where they discussed what to expect.
“If Shami is going to perform really well then there would be a lot of question marks for selectors as to why he isn’t on the plane to Australia. And imagine Arshdeep, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah or Harshal Patel, as one of these if you’re a if you have a bad day then there would be more question marks So go with the guys you already chose no matter if they do well or not I know it’s hard for Mohammed Shami but it was hard for him anyway when he was not chosen in the squad of 15 for the World Cup,” Gambhir said during the press conference.
“So if you pick him in the XI over other guys who would be on the plane to Australia it doesn’t make sense to me. He should just be a backup if someone has a glitch or an injury and one of these guys are not available and you have to pick three fast bowlers otherwise there will be a lot of criticism and I’m sure selectors won’t take that risk,” he added.
Answering an NDTV question about whether Shami should have been part of the Indian World Cup squad, Hayden said: “When you look at someone like Shami, does he have any additional surprises that Australian cricket doesn’t know or hasn’t seen? Yes he is a brilliant cricketer and he has the ability to take wickets But will he be as good as someone like a Jasprit Bumrah And I think it’s too easy to think the glass is half full but you have to support yourself.”
“That’s something that happens around the Australian cricket team in regards to Aaron Finch. It’s all about that squad, if you cross that line, thinking we have this. This is our team, we’re sure,” he added up. .
India vs Australia T20I will be available from September 20 to September 25 on the Star Sports Network.
