‘IOC’s latest move casts shadow over India’s bid to host major events’ | More sports News

NEW DELHI: The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) renewed threat to ban India over its national Olympic body’s failure to address ‘ongoing internal disputes, governance shortcomings and court cases’ set the country’s hopes of hosting the 2030 Youth Olympics and 2036 Summer Olympics in danger.
The IOC’s warning on Thursday was a harsh wake-up call for Indian sports officials, who had been harboring hopes of presenting a plan of proposed Olympic projects to the world body’s top leadership when it visits India in 2023 for the Session. of the IOC.
“The IOC takes its warning very seriously and there is a strong possibility that the country could face a global suspension if the elections were not held by December this year. By postponing the IOC Session to September, the world body has made its intentions clear. And there is no guarantee that the IOC will wait until December for the IOA to proceed with its elections. It can move the IOC Session. In this case, it will certainly jeopardize the candidacy of India to host the Youth Olympics and Summer Olympics,” a senior IOA official told TOI on Friday.
In his letter to the Secretary General of the AIO Rajeev MehtaJames MacLeod, Director of Olympic Solidarity and NOC Relations for the IOC, wrote: “Such a suspension of the NOC of India would mean, in particular, that Indian athletes could no longer represent the country and compete under the flag/ name of the country at the Olympics and other international sporting events.
