The third and final ODI between India and England could have come to a controversial end when all-rounder Deepti Sharma slammed Charlotte Dean on the non-striker’s side after she backed up too far before the ball was about to be released. The debate over this method of dismissal has gripped the cricket fraternity. However, it is important not to forget that this match was Jhulan Goswami’s international cricket and she said goodbye in style. Team India registered a series sweep when they defeated England in the final ODI by 16 runs.

Jhulan returned with a spell of 2-30 and she took the wickets of Alice Capsey and Kate Cross in her farewell match. She has now finished her career with 355 wickets, 255 of which came in ODIs – most by a bowler in women’s ODIs.

The delivery to beat Kate Cross was an absolute jaffa. It was a big inswinger coming back down the slope, beating Cross through the bat and pad chasm, past the inside rim and crashing into the leg stump.

Goswami celebrated by raising her arms high above her shoulders.

Charlie Dean had run away with England on 65/7, chasing 170, and set up a 38-run tie with skipper Amy Jones. Even after Jones was fired, Dean kept going and even when Kate Cross fell for the retiring Jhulan Goswami, she kept England’s hopes alive.

But Deepti’s elimination meant India gave Jhulan Goswami a winning farewell match and also a historic series sweep.
