Born the son of Hindi film composer and singer in Kolkata, Sachin Dev Burman, RD Burman was an Indian high-ranking music director. RD Burman is widely known as the ‘Music Scientist’ and the ‘King of Bollywood Music’. He composed scores for 331 films from the 1960s to the 1990s. RD Burman was trained by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (sarod) and Samta Prasad (tabla). He also regarded Salil Chowdhury as his guru. Nicknamed Pancham, RD Burman is known for songs like ‘Keh Dun Tumhe Ya Chup Rahun’, ‘Tu Tu Hai Wahi’, the eponymous song ‘Mehabooba’ from ‘Sholay’ (1975) and many others. His first wife was Rita Patel whom he married in 1966 and divorced in 1971. In 1980 he married the legendary singer Asha Bhosle.
