Germany wants Belarus excluded from Euro 2024 | Football News

BERLIN: Euro 2024 Germany, the host country, has requested UEFA exclude belarus the tournament because of its support for Russia, an Interior Ministry spokesman said on Friday.
In a letter to the head of UEFA Alexandre CeferinGerman interior minister Nancy Faeser also called for the suspension of Russian and Belarusian officials from the football body, according to a Spiegel article confirmed by the ministry spokesperson.
European football’s governing body has so far only ruled out Russia following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
But Faeser said that “not only Russia, which is waging a war in violation of international law, but also Belarus, as the main supporter of the Russian leadership, should be excluded from all international football matches and tournaments”, according to Spiegel.
The world of sport must “live up to its responsible role and unite against this form of disregard for human rights”, she added.
Germany’s call came as the clock approached for the qualifying draw for the Oct. 9 tournament in Frankfurt.
Germany will be the sole host of the 2024 final, unlike the Euro 2020 final – delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic – when the championship was spread across the continent in 11 cities.
Ten German stadiums will host matches, including Berlin’s iconic Olympic Stadium and Munich’s Allianz Arena, home of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, who hold 66,000 for internationals.
The Allianz Arena will be used for the second consecutive European Championship after hosting three Euro 2020 group matches and a quarter-final.
