NEW DELHI: India to host Spain in new season FIH Pro League next month and captain Manpreet Singh wants to take the opportunity to better understand his rivals ahead of the 2023 men’s championship hockey world cup which will be held in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
India will face New Zealand in the Pro League opener on October 28 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, followed by the second game against Spain on October 30.
Placed in the same pool, India will face Spain in their opening match of the World Cup at the new Birsa Munda International Stadium in Rourkela on January 13.
“It’s great that we have the chance to play against Spain now in the Pro League games. It will allow us to understand their game and what we need to improve before meeting them again in the first game of the Pro League. FIH Odisha Bhubaneswar-Rourkela Men’s World Cup of Hockey 2023,” Manpreet said in a Hockey India Release.
“Overall, these are exciting times for hockey and I hope fans around the world will come to Rourkela and Bhubaneswar to support our campaign.”
In the World Cup, India, bronze medalists at the Tokyo Olympics, who currently sit fifth in the world in the FIH rankings, rub shoulders with England (6), Spain (8) and debutants Wales (16) in Pool D.
After Spain, India will play their second match in Rourkela, against England on January 15, before moving to the capital Bhubaneswar, where they will face Wales in their last group game on January 19.
The match against Spain in the World Cup will be the Indian team’s first outing at the new Rourkela Stadium, which is expected to become the biggest hockey stadium in the world.
“We have all experienced how electrifying the atmosphere can be at Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar and from what I have heard from my team mates who are from Sundergarh, the fans in this area are all looking to show up in large number for all matches played at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela,” Manpreet said.
“I can already feel the goosebumps thinking about the turnout for the opening game. It will be quite amazing to play in the new Birsa Munda hockey stadium, which will be the biggest stadium in the country with more than 20,000 seats,” he added. .
