EPL: Maupay goal earns Everton victory over West Ham | Football News

LIVERPOOL (England): Neal Maupay marked his first Everton goal of leading the Merseysiders to their first premier league win of the season with a 1-0 win over West Ham United providing relief Goodison Park on Sunday.
Maupay, a recent Brighton & Hove Albion signing, took an excellent touch from Alex Iwobi’s pass and flew into the back of the net from the edge of the box in the 53rd minute.
The victory ended a run of four successive draws for Everton and moved them to 13th in the table, while West Ham remained in the bottom three with a win in seven games, their 1,000th loss in the top flight.
“It means a lot,” Maupay told Sky Sports. “I’m very happy with the win, that’s the main thing. We played well and it was only a matter of time. Hopefully we can build on it.
“The first touch is always key, then you can have an easier finish. We have very good players in midfield and on the wing.
“I have to be there to finish. I know my job, I just have to score.”
Both teams huffed and huffed in the first half without creating many chances. Everton had the majority of possession but failed to manage a single shot on target.
West Ham created a succession of corners, some of which led to header opportunities, but none had the power or direction to beat home goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who was in injured Jordan Pickford’s squad .
Maupay’s 53rd-minute goal relieved the home fans but also put West Ham into action and they hit the woodwork through substitute Said Benrahma, whose curled shot beat Begovic but not the post.
“If you look at the table before the game, it was two teams on the same score,” said West Ham captain Declan Rice. “There wasn’t much in it. We had chances but we couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.
“In the first half we turned the ball over so many times, at this level you can’t do that.
“We have to keep playing and keep believing, and do what the manager wants. It’s time to turn things around. It’s up to us the players.”
