CWG 2022: Weightlifter Bindyarani Devi clinches silver | Commonwealth Games 2022 News

BIRMINGHAM: India Bindyarani Devi raised her game to capture a silver medal in the women’s 55kg category, finishing fourth in the country bodybuilding medal in as many categories at the Commonwealth Games here.
Shortly after Mirabai Chanu won gold, the 23-year-old created a Games record by lifting 116kg in the clean and jerk after a personal best 86kg in the snatch, totaling 202kg on Saturday .
The gold medal is expected to go to Nigerian Adijat Adenike Olarinoye, who lifted 203kg (92kg + 111kg). She also broke the Games record for snatch and total effort.
Home favorite England’s Fraer Morrow won bronze with an effort of 198kg (89kg+109kg).
“It’s my first CTM and I’m very happy with the silver medal and the Games record as well,” Bindyarani said.
Like Chanu, Bindyarani is also from Manipur. She had won gold at the Commonwealth Championships in 2019 before securing a silver medal at the 2021 edition.
The daughter of a farmer who also owns a grocery store, Bindyarani took up weightlifting due to her short stature.
“I practiced taekwondo from 2008 to 2012, after which I switched to weightlifting. I had a height problem, so I had to change. Everyone said that my height was ideal for weightlifting . So I changed.”
Bindyarani was in the bronze medal after the snatch section with a personal best 86kg, behind Olarinoye (92kg) and Fraer (89kg).
The Indian made a second unsuccessful attempt for 115kg before lifting another kilogram to elevate her to bronze silver as Morrow missed her final attempt at 115kg.
Earlier in the day, Chanu had given India their first gold medal while Sanket Sargar and Gururaja Poojary took home the silver and bronze medals respectively.
