CWG 2022: Murali Sreeshankar wins historic silver in long jump | Commonwealth Games 2022 News

BIRMINGHAM: Murali Sreeshankar won a silver medal in the men’s long jump hand India its second athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Indian soared 8.08m on his fifth attempt to finish second to Laquan Nairn of the Bahamas in a nerve-wracking men’s long jump final.
Nairn also had a best jump of 8.08m but his second best of 7.98m was better than Sreeshankar’s 7.84m.
According to the rules, if two jumpers are tied over the same distance, the one with the best second-best effort will be ranked ahead.
Jovan van Vuuren (8.06m) of South Africa won bronze.
The other Indian in the fray, Mohammed Anees Yahiya finished fifth with a best jump of 7.97m.
Sreeshankar’s silver was the best among Indian CWG male long jumpers. Suresh Babu won a bronze medal in the 1978 edition.
Among women, Prajusha Maliakkal won a silver medal at the 2010 edition in Delhi, while the legendary Anju Bobby George picked up a bronze medal in 2002.
Wednesday, Tejaswin Shankar had won a bronze medal in the men’s high jump to open India’s medal tally in athletics in this CWG.
