BIRMINGHAM: India’s women’s table tennis team, led by Manika Batrabegan their Commonwealth Games title defense in emphatic fashion, outscoring South Africa 3-0 in their Group 2 opener on Friday.
Women’s doubles duo Sreeja Akula and Reeth Tennisonwho combined well to beat the South African pair of Laila Edwards and Danish Patel 11-7, 11-7, 11-5 to give India the lead.
Batra, then defending Commonwealth Games champion, who became the first Indian table tennis player to win a women’s singles gold medal last edition, lived up to her bill and beat Musfique Kalam 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 in the first singles match.
Akula then came back and scored a dominating 11-5, 11-3, 11-6 win over Patel in the second single to seal the tie for India.
The Indians will face Fiji in their second group match later today.
