BIRMINGHAM: It was another successful day for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games here as they added four more medals to their tally, taking the total to 13 – 5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze .
The quartet of Lovely Choubey, Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki and Nayanmoni Saikia created history by winning the country’s first-ever medal in the sport of lawn ballsbeating South Africa (17-10) in the women’s four-man final.
Meanwhile, Vijay Thakur continued the medal rush by the bodybuilding contingent by winning a silver medal in the men’s 96 kg final. The weightlifters have so far brought eight medals to India’s tally at the ongonig Games.

The second gold medal of day 5 came from the Table tennis hall, where the Indian men’s team beat Singapore to successfully defend the gold medal they won in the last edition in 2018. However, the mixed badminton team could not repeat their feat of four years ago and had to settle for silver after losing to Malaysia in the final.
In athletics, long jumpers Murali Sreeshankar and Muhammed Anees Yahiya confirmed their place in the final, as did Manpreet Kaur in the women’s shot put.

Swimmers Kushagra Rawat and Advait Page took the last two qualifying spots to reach the men’s 1500m freestyle final.
However, Saurav Ghosal’s quest for an individual gold medal in squash ended in defeat in the semi-finals. He will now take part in the bronze medal game.
