Commonwealth Games 2022: Boxer Lovlina Borgohain cruises to quarterfinals | Commonwealth Games 2022 News

BIRMINGHAM: Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain (70kg) qualified for the quarter-finals of the women’s light middleweight division with an easy 5-0 victory over Ariana Nicholson at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday.
Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina defeated New Zealand pugilist Ariana Nicholson in the 70kg competition. The Indian put her long reach to good use by tiring her opponent, who is 15 years her senior.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), bronze medalist at the last CWG in 2018, beat young Amzolele Dyeyi South Africa with the same margin in the men’s featherweight category (57 kg) to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.
Lovlina, who was knocked out in the first round of the Gold Coast edition, attacked from the start, using a combination of punches.
Nicholson, 39, preferred to conserve energy.
Lovlina will now face Rosie Eccles of Wales in the quarter-finals. She had alleged that her coaches were constantly harassed after her personal trainer Sandhya Gurung was not allowed to enter the Games Village upon arrival.
Gurung, who was seen at ringside, later received Village accreditation.
Hussamuddin used his quick hands and nimble footwork to defeat his rival.
The Indian kept his form from the start and didn’t let his opponent take the lead in any of the three rounds.
As the South African strove to destabilize the experienced Indian, Hussamuddin was up to the task of denying any overtures to his rival.
Hussamuddin will face Md Salim Hossain of Bangladesh in the next round for a place in the quarter-finals.
