Chandigarh, July 25

The city has seen a spurt in Covid-19 cases, growing 40 percent in the past week. As many as 734 cases were registered this week, up from 524 the previous week.

Week cases

July 17 to 23 734

July 10 to 16 524

July 3 to 9 371

The daily positivity rate stands at 9.96% while the weekly city positivity rate hovers at 8.81%. The active caseload has increased to 762 cases.

The number of hospital admissions in the city has also risen to 32 patients, while the rest are in home isolation. The PGIMER treats 12 patients in its Covid ward, while 10 patients are admitted to the GMCH-32 and nine to GMSH-16.

Chandigarh’s Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr. Suman Singh said: “We perform genome sequencing of random samples twice a month and so far Omicron is the only circulating variant in the city.” Dr Sanjeev Palta of the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, GMCH-32, said: “The patients currently on ventilator in ICU units are those with comorbidities who need extra care. There is no change in symptoms as patients report common fever and muscle aches.”

dr. PVM Lakshmi of the Department of Community Medicine, PGIMER, said: “Most are cases of reinfection because there is no cross-immunity in this variant. The real concern will be if the severity of cases suddenly increases, which is currently not happening.”

“The Covid virus has mutated well and has established its presence in the community. We just need to continue the genomic surveillance so we’re on the lookout for new variants, if there are any,” added Dr. Lakshmi.

The city has so far vaccinated only 7.74% of the city’s population with the booster dose. About 24% of children in the 12-14 age group are still waiting for their first dose of Corbevax and only 45.33% have taken the second dose.
