Rohit Sharma in a pensive mood as India lost to Sri Lanka in Asia Cup
The Indian cricket team lost for the second time in a row on Tuesday night in the Super 4 stage of the 2022 Asian Cup as it failed to defend another goal of over 170 runs. India had set a goal for Sri Lanka of 174 runs and the Lankans chased it down with 6 wickets in hand and one ball left. The last two overs were an exact replica of how India lost its match against Pakistan on Sunday.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s ineffective bowling in the penultimate over cost India again and the young Arshdeep’s efforts were in vain as he had only 6 runs to defend on either occasion.
India’s toothless bowling in the power play saw Sri Lanka win as Lankan openers Nissanka and Mendis took the match. Yuzvendra Chahal’s three wickets brought India into the game, but the pacers lacked the edge that could help the Indians dominate in the death overs.
The second loss in a row means India is now on the brink of being ousted. But Rohit Sharma’s team can still qualify for the final.
Here are all the scenarios the three other teams have in mind:
Sri Lanka: The Lankans are almost through to the final after their second win in a row. India would now need Sri Lanka to beat Pakistan and that too by a wide margin.
promoted
Pakistan:If Pakistan defeats Afghanistan on Wednesday, the curtain will be on Rohit Sharma’s team. India needs Babar Azam and his men to lose by a large margin to Sri Lanka and a relatively small margin to Afghanistan.
Afghanistan:The mighty Afghans will be India’s last opponents in the Super 4 stage, but for that they need Mohammad Nabi’s team to beat Pakistan. India would then hope to beat the Afghans by a wide margin to keep their chances alive.
