Oscar winners Alan Arkin and Kathy Bates, as well as Teyana Taylor have joined Casey Affleck in an indie heist thriller the blow.
The trio joins a growing cast that already includes Marisa Tomei, Isabel May and Yul Vazquez.
David M. Rosenthal, who directed thrillers The perfect man and the remake of Jacob’s ladderis heading the film that will be shot in LA later this fall.
Rosenthal and Keith Kjarval wrote the script after the novel by Richard Lange. Kjarval, who runs the prolific indie banner Unified Pictures, also co-produces with Sam Rockwell, Play Hooky’s Mark Berger (Of mice and men), and Andrea Bucko of Sugar Rush Pictures (Tin Soldier).
To beat revolves around a con man (Affleck) who hits rock bottom when he meets a budding con artist played by Taylor. After a tip from a wise con man (Arkin), the two head to LA to commit the biggest scam of their lives… ambitious ex (Tomei). As the scam unfolds, the man can’t figure out if he and the woman are really falling in love or are ready for the ultimate grab.
Ben Ruffman, Tom Lasally of 3 Arts Entertainment and Will Rowbotham, Doug Grozelle and Shane David Goenfield are executive producers.

Bringing together this powerful troupe of actors feels like an old-fashioned, ’70s way of making a movie, and Mark and I couldn’t be happier to be part of this team,” Rockwell said in a statement.

Arkin is the veteran actor who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal in Little Miss Sunshineand was nominated in the same category for argo, among three other times. He recently starred opposite Michael Douglas on HBO’s series, The Kominsky Method. He is represented by CAA, Lasher Group and Felker Toczek.
Bates won her Oscar for her portrayal in the 1990 Stephen King adaptation, Troubleand was recently nominated in 2020 for Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell. She then appears with Rachel McAdams in Are you there God? It’s me, Margaretwhich will be released in 2023. Bates is represented by CAA.
Singer-actress Taylor appeared with Eddie Murphy in Coming 2 America and is currently recording a remake of White men can’t jump with Jack Harlow and Sinqua Walls. She is represented by WME.
