KABUL: As spinner Rashid Khan was named Monday in a strong Afghan squad for Ireland’s five-game Twenty20 international series starting next week.
The 23-year-old is key for Afghanistan in Ireland as well as in the Asian Cup (August-September) in the United Arab Emirates and the Twenty20 World Cup (October-November) in Australia.
Rashid took four wickets in Afghanistan’s 3-0 loss to Zimbabwe in June this year and will feature in the squad despite his league commitments in England’s The Hundred, also from this week.
“We’ve had good results on our last tours, the team has done well recently and we hope to have good results again in Ireland and then in the Asian Cup and the World Cup,” the coach said. Chief Noor Malikzai.
Ibrahim Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Naveen-ul-Haq were named in the 16-member Afghan squad while spinners Qais Ahmad and Mujeeb ur Rahman were added as reserves.
Mohammad Nabi will lead the team for the series, which will be played in Belfast and kick off on August 9.
Afghanistan lost three of their five matches at the T20 World Cup last year, failing to reach the semi-finals.
