4-year data science degree from IIT-Madras for all

NEW DELHI: If you studied English and Mathematics in Class X and completed Class XII, how about a four-year degree in Programming and Data Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and that too without joining the cutthroat JEE( Advanced)? The IIT has announced that its BSc in Programming and Data Science now comes with a four-year BSc degree option with multiple entry and exit options. And there is no age or geographic limit to take this program. Although the course is delivered online, the exams will be administered in person at 116 centers in 111 cities in India. IIT-M has also opened exam centers in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Sri Lanka. The IIT will also facilitate internships and internships for the graduate students.

According to the IIT, at the request of aspirants, this program is now offered as a four-year degree and is designed to provide students with multiple entry and exit options where the learner can earn a certificate, diploma or diploma. Students can do an eight-month internship or project at companies or research institutes.

Aspirants currently in Class XII may also be considered for admission into the program. Admitted students start the program after successfully completing their class XII. Students from any stream can enroll. And the classes are taught online.

Currently, more than 13,000 students are enrolled in the program with the maximum number of students coming from Tamil Nadu, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

V Kamakoti, Director of IIT-M said: “IIT Madras is delighted to offer this well-designed, contemporary degree in Data Science and Applications, which provides access to IIT quality education in an inclusive manner to learners across the country. Data science is one of the emerging topics. This is a highly employment-oriented program in an area where the demand for skilled resources is high.”

In this program, students learn to manage data, visualize patterns to gain management insights, model uncertainties, and build models that help forecasting to make effective business decisions.

Professor Andrew Thangaraj, professor in charge of the program, said: “Because data science is a multidisciplinary domain, this degree from IIT-M is open to students from all backgrounds. Students pursuing commerce or humanities can also earn a degree from IIT Madras Because the content is delivered online and the in-person exams are taken on Sundays, this degree can also be obtained while on-campus or working full-time.”

According to the IIT, this program will directly benefit the students from rural areas and economically disadvantaged backgrounds for whom attending JEE coaching classes would be a major hurdle. The program also offers up to 100% scholarships for deserving students in financial need.
